The History of OCHS

The original building was erected in 1923 and expanded upon in 1983.  The demolition began in 2004 and ended in 2005.  The school crest, which appears on many school related materials, has a special meaning to Ocean City High School. The hawk, or "Raider" type bird, represents the symbolic name of the Ocean City Red Raiders. The books at the top part of the crest represent the educational endeavors of the Ocean City School District. The plows at the top represent the agricultural industry, which has always been important to the Southern New Jersey Area. The ship in the middle (with the OC on it) sails off the coast of Ocean City. During the 1800's, pirate ships often uses the bay area as a hiding place while waiting for the ships to appear and then they would raid them. The ship also represents the ship building industry, which at one time was very important to the economy of South Jersey. Our present yearbook is called the "Caravel" and the school paper is known as the "Billows" (for the white caps of the waves of the beautiful Atlantic Ocean). These white tops can be seen at the bottom of the boat on the crest. Ocean City High School is rich in tradition and all the students should be proud of the school and their South Jersey Heritage.

Although the new high school opened its doors in September 2004, Ocean City High School has a program with a long history of being “committed to excellence.”  Founded in 1904, Ocean City High School reflects the community's pride in academic achievement, athletics, and the arts.

Ocean City High School is a comprehensive high school serving the communities of Ocean City, Upper Township, Sea Isle City, and Corbin City, with an enrollment of over 1,250 students.  Academic rigor, student activities, and parent involvement are embedded in the educational program at Ocean City. Students can choose from over 200 courses, including 18 Advanced Placement courses.  Our program also offers a complete honors program in the four core subjects and world language. Unique to the study of world languages, Ocean City High Schools and has a computer lab dedicated to speaking and listening and offers courses in American Sign Language.

Ocean City High School is a New Jersey Choice School for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; Performing Arts; and Banking and Finance. Our Choice programs attract students from numerous communities in South Jersey.

Additionally, OCHS partners with Atlantic Cape, Richard Stockton College and Rowan University offering dual enrollment in many courses.  We also offer a non-traditional experience, known as the Extension School, for those students needing an alternative high school experience.  Our staff, highly qualified under NCLB, distinguishes itself by their willingness to go the extra mile in the classroom; the guidance office; and various other aspects of our students’ lives.

Our students perform well on the state assessments and various other standardized tests. Ocean City High School students consistently outperform the average of our district factor group.  More than 92 percent of our graduating seniors plan to attend college.  Some of the members of the graduating class continue their education at the most prestigious universities in the nation. Ocean City High School was recognized by NJ Monthly Magazine with a rank of #1 high school in New Jersey in the district factor group CD.

Ocean City High School fields varsity teams in 24 sports. Our athletic teams consistently perform on the championship level, but we are most proud of our sportsmanship and teamwork. We are happy to share the aspects of OCHS that make it truly a unique place: the crew team, the surf team, and the Marching, Concert, and Jazz Bands.  Our fall drama productions and the spring musical are popular among the students, and they reflect our school’s strong commitment to the arts.

What is difficult to report statistically, however, is the quality and character of our students.  Ocean City High School students are constantly involved in the community. They organize and sponsor many community events from blood drives and various food drives; they provide holiday dinners to families in need or kind letters for our troops overseas. They are simply awesome!  The staff at Ocean City High School is one of the most dedicated and hard working groups with whom I have been associated with.

Ocean City’s broad curriculum, athletic program, and emphasis on the arts foster a family atmosphere and promote unity. The Ocean City High School community strives to ensure that a positive learning environment and robust educational program are afforded to each student everyday.
